Dear All
A campaigner for Roma gipsies' rights has been charged with helping scores of Romanians illegally claim millions in benefits.
Under current rules, people from Romania cannot claim benefits unless they unless they can prove they have paid employment lined up.
It is alleged that Lavinia Olmazu and her boyfriend Alin Enachi masterminded a scam by which 172 Romanians claimed £2.6million.
They are said to have done this by giving unemployed Romanians false documentation which purported to offer them work, provided false invoices and references.
A number of Romanians then fraudulently obtained NI numbers to claim child benefit, working tax credit and child tax credit.
The scam is further alleged to have been operated from a supposedly charitable organisation called Roma Concern.
This is very much organised crime and such cases only highlight the need as I previously wrote for a proper immigration policy to be put in place.
The current situation is untenable.
The offences came to light because of an internal Department of Work and Pensions investigation into an unusually high number of applications involving Roma applicants.
In other words, it was chance that led to this case being investigated and prosecuted because these people effectively did too much in the one area.
The Charity Commission has no record of Roma Concern as a charity, but Olmazu and Enachi are listed at Companies House as directors of a company with the same name.
One can only wonder why she wouldn’t work within the current system and argue her case rather than resort to these methods.
Given the nature of the offences, money involved and longevity, I would expect she and her boyfriend are looking at substantial prison terms.
Of the Romanians involved they should be deported and barred from entering Britain.
It is acts like these which do so much harm to community relations and foster an air of suspicion and mistrust of outsiders.
You can lay this crap at the door of the Labour Government's immigration policy as the total failure it is to regulate properly.
Long term solutions are needed for long term problems, the Labour Government acts with a workie mentality of ‘I’ve done my job, it’s your problem’.
