The UN Security Council has issued a resolution to deal with the crisis in Libya.
Three things I was previously called for that must and needed to happen.
United Nations led initiative.
No fly zone.
China and Russia to ‘get off the fence’!
All of this has come to pass.
Libya must be a United Nations initiative; Iraq and Afghanistan dictate this as essential.
No fly zone given the situation on the ground was also dictated to save lives of ordinary people from a brutal dictator and his hired mercenaries.
And finally, that China and Russia as full Security Council can’t just sit there and veto. In not vetoing action, this is the kind of first step that China and Russia need to do to take their place in the international community.
I expect in future to see both these countries being more proactive.
With the Security Council resolution passing the Libyan Government now knows the situation is serious, they have declaring an immediate ceasefire.
They say this gesture is intended "to protect civilians".
It was done out of fear, fear that what happened in Iraq with Saddam and his family could happen in Libya with Gaddafi and his sons.
It was only because of delays that Gaddafi thought it was safe to unleash his Airforce and hired mercenaries to kill civilians.
As well as China and Russia shifting policy, the Americans have also moved quite considerably from what must be considered a slow start.
UN Security Council Resolution 1973 gave broad backing to taking military action against all threats to civilians, which correspondents say could include bombing Col Gaddafi's forces on the ground if necessary.
The bottom line, Libya has to have a new regime, there is two ways this can be achieved, either Gaddafi steps down peacefully or he is removed by force.
The people of Libya deserve better and everyone should recognise that the time and winds of change are blowing through out the Middle East.
This time, we cannot afford to be on the wrong side of history.
No fly zone is a prelude to what must now logically follow; preparation for land invasion.
Everything I said should happen has happened; yet again George Laird was right and ahead of the curve.
