Scottish independence: 99.8% of Falkland Islanders vote to stay British, Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon’s right wing government suffer major setback, no one votes to hand over their country to a junta even one led by a ‘jolly fat man’!

The people of the Falkland Islands have voted overwhelmingly to remain a British overseas territory.

The result was as expected, with 99.8% declaring that British is best.

The Falklands War a few decades ago has left a deep scar on the islanders; turn out, was an impressive 92% of the people.

It is a clear message of defiance to the Argentine government, in Britain, there is another referendum on the go.

Scottish people will be sending a similar message to Alex Salmond, Nicola Sturgeon and their right wing government.

Foreign Secretary William Hague welcomed the outcome, saying it "demonstrates more clearly than ever" the islanders wish to remain as an overseas territory.

Despite being so far away, the Islanders connection with Britain is tied with history and by blood much like Scotland is with the rest of the UK. Do I still believe in that Scotland should be independent?

Yes, I do, but I realise that Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon are not the people to lead us, I have turned my back on them, I wouldn’t support people who I see as “rotten to the core”. In politics you can be fooled but eventually these people give themselves away, Salmond and Sturgeon have.

The Falkland islanders know one thing which I know, you can tell who is genuinely interested in the welfare of the people, not for political gain but because it is the right thing to do, the SNP is not.

The recent poll has been ratified as "free and fair" by international observers.

Although that should settle the matter, the Argentineans will not be giving up their claim to what they call the Las Malvinas.

As easily as the Argentineans were defeated so too will Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon in 2014.

Nigel Haywood, governor of the Falkland Islands, said the referendum was a "massive demonstration of the way the Falkland Islanders feel and of the way they see their future".

He said:

"Obviously it is a major principle of the United Nations that a people have their right to self-determination, and you don't get a much clearer expression of the people's self-determination than such a large turn out and such a large yes vote."

Foreign Sec William Hague said:

"I welcome today's result, which demonstrates more clearly than ever the Falkland Islanders' wish to remain an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. We have always been clear that we believe in the rights of the Falklands people to determine their own futures and to decide on the path they wish to take. It is only right that, in the 21st century, these rights are respected. All countries should accept the results of this referendum and support the Falkland Islanders as they continue to develop their home and their economy. I wish them every success in doing so."

The vote by the Falkland islanders is another blow to the shattered Scottish independence campaign of Alex Salmond, ordinary working class people know that Salmond doesn’t stand up for them, just as the Islanders know that Argentina doesn’t care a jot about them.

Scots are walking away from the SNP, their financial donations are drying, their support is ebbing away, they are losing by-elections, they are misleading the public, they are making fake promises and they have lost the trust of the people.

This result to remain British could be echoed in Scotland in 2014.

Salmond and Sturgeon’s defeat is certain, the question is how bad?

And as the SNP know, George Laird is always right.
