Former Labour minister, Kim Howells has now called for the "great majority" of British troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan.
As well as this epiphany; he has correctly focused in on that UK borders need to properly secure.
Kim Howells sits and is chairman of Intelligence and security committee so he gets privy to sensitive information but regardless even the man on the street knows that Afghanistan is worth the sacrifice of British lives.
The idea that the occupation of Afghanistan could last for decades has been described by him as "absurd".
The Afghans have to take control of their own country rather living in a lawless country with a few safe spots.
The public support for the mission had collapsed because of the rigged Afghan presidential election which is beset by claims of corruption and fraud.
These allegations are against the current government led by Karzai.
Mr Howells said;
"I think that part of the problem is the way in which we have handled the Karzai government and the way in which we have handled our NATO allies because the great burden of fighting and of deaths and injuries have been borne by the Americans, by us, by the Canadians and the Danes”.
The rest of the allies know this is an unwinnable war and have wisely stayed out of the way and who can blame them.
We didn’t bring democracy to Afghanistan, just installed a puppet.
Mr Howells is the first senior politician to call for a withdrawal of UK troops but where are the rest?
What are they waiting, the good weather to come in?

"If he's saying we can provide for our security at our own borders, then I disagree with him."
Another example why people think he is dense!
Even Labour MP Eric Joyce, who I would describe as the worst kind of New Labour sycophant said that Kim Howells was "quite right" that the UK's priority should be on protecting its citizens at home.
We have lost so many good people, killed for a cause which was badly planned and thought-out.
How many more have to die?
The recent deaths of a further five soldiers takes the number of British military personnel killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 229.
We ill served our troops by not speaking out on their behalf.
Kim Howells may start a ball rolling that could prove unstoppable if men of good will take up the cause.
