Michael Martin, Labour Party to get Peerage for failure!

Dear All

We all know it was going to happen and it did happen.

And for the record; I still consider it a disgrace.

Michael Martin, the former Commons Speaker, was on course last night to become Lord Martin of Springburn.

It was always on the cards that the Queen gave the nod to his ennoblement so he can hide out in the House of Lords.

Michael Martin is the first Speaker in 300 years to be ousted from the prestigious post and for good reason; his conduct in the Chamber not withstanding, the dragging of his feet on expenses reform was more like a shop steward protecting excessive workers perks!

Lord Lawson, ex- Conservative Chancellor said: "It's a great mistake. It's unfortunate."

A Liberal Democrat spokesman said; "This looks like automatic reward for failure."

Martin in some respects was a scapegoat but he was a goat with blood on his hands, the usual drill is to say that;

"They could not abide the fact that he was Scottish, working-class and Catholic."

For some that maybe so, a minority but the vast majority who called for Martin to stand down don’t fit that profile of a bigot.

The motion to slip Martin a peerage was done last Monday at 10 pm when it was quiet, the wording was

"be most graciously pleased to confer some signal mark of her royal favour upon the Right Honourable Mr Michael J Martin for his eminent services during the important period in which he presided with such distinguished ability and dignity in the Chair of this House".

This was the same wording used before Betty Boothroyd received her peerage; however she was a fine indeed exceptional Speaker of the House of Commons.

This reward is undeserved and it shows how out of touch New Labour is with the public but this is ‘pals rewarding pals’!

This is something that the citizens of Glasgow are all too familiar with regarding the Labour Party.

Yours sincerely
