Scottish independence: Lord Robertson says Scottish independence would be cataclysmic for the West, he ‘over eggs' his pudding prompting Scotland’s unpopular Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to be ‘shocked’, she is sticking with ‘student union’ politics leaving Scotland defenceless

Dear All

George Robertson was a Labour MP; he then went on to become secretary general of Nato.

I have to say that I thought that was a surprise appointment; however he managed to sail through without stumbling.

Amazing isn’t it!

Anyway, Lord Robertson as he now is; has decided to put his toes into the independence debate.

Why not more the merrier!

However, he is finding things a trifle heated after he spoke up; saying a "debilitating divorce" after the vote in September would threaten the stability of the wider world.

This provoked a ‘cue the angry response from Yes campaigners’, someone speaking out against Salmond and Sturgeon, start screaming immediately.

Robertson claims Scottish independence would be cataclysmic for the West.

I assume his remarks are brought about by the Russians in the Ukraine who are have no right to be there, have breached Ukrainian sovereignty and have rather done themselves no good.

His wider point is that we have entered a period of international turmoil with the chance of slipping back into a ‘Cold War’ with the Russians.

Speaking in America to probably a strong pro UK crowd; and an American administration that aren’t going to be backing Salmond and Sturgeon, he will find a listening audience for his views.

If the Scottish National Party had gone with keeping NATO and pro Faslane remaining a nuclear sub base, they would have eased some fears.

Rather than growing up and join the club, Salmond and Sturgeon opted instead for a half way house which is a sham.

They rather than think it through opted for keeping their rag tag group of grudge, grievance and malcontent activists onboard and decided to stick with their nuclear disarmament policy.

So, the Americans are backing the UK all the way behind closed doors.

Salmond and Sturgeon are halfwits!

It is doubtful that the Americans will go as far as publicly coming out against the independence bid, but I suspect they will go down the road of ‘regret’ regarding the nuclear stance.

In a powerful speech at the Brookings Institute, Lord Robertson said:

"The loudest cheers for the break-up of Britain would be from our adversaries and from our enemies. For the second military power in the west to shatter this year would be cataclysmic in geo-political terms. This is not a purely domestic matter even though it's a decision that will be taken by the Scottish people. The Scottish people need to be conscious that they are taking a decision, not just for themselves and for future generations in a one-off vote, but that it also has an effect elsewhere and people who are affected, or think they will be affected, have every right to speak out."

Robertson is right, the SNP who are utterly clueless on defence have are attempting to weaken the security of the West because of ‘Student union politics’.

A spokesman for First Minister Alex Salmond said:

"Scotland can and will make a hugely positive contribution to the world as an independent country - and our referendum is a model of democracy, which was cited as such only last month by the US Secretary of State. It is disappointing but not surprising that Lord Robertson fails to recognise any of that in this crass and offensive speech that has absolutely nothing positive to say. And it is contributions like his which are turning people across Scotland in their droves away from the fear and smear tactics of the No campaign towards the positive, upbeat, optimistic message of the Yes campaign. Lord Robertson once claimed having a Scottish Parliament would kill demand for independence stone dead - with comments like this it is the No campaign that will continue to sink like a stone."

What is positive about Alex Salmond and unpopular Nicola Sturgeon weakening Western defence?

Is there a feelgood factor in being stupid I don’t know about?

Unpopular Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was "shocked" by the language of the former Labour defence secretary.

Shocked as in shocked, gasp horror, shock!

Sturgeon said:

"Lord Robertson is a long-standing and very vociferous opponent of independence, so on one level I perhaps shouldn't be too surprised by the comments that he's made. On another level though, I am quite shocked at these comments. The contribution George Robertson made last night, and in particular the language he's used to make it in, I think does a real disservice to the debate”.

Nicola Sturgeon can think on different levels?

Did she learn that at Drumchapel law centre, learning how to defend a nation while doing people’s benefit claims?

Sturgeon added:

"Look at some of the language: 'It would be cataclysmic for Scotland to become independent, it would aid the forces of darkness, it would threaten the stability of the western world'. That just completely moves away from any semblance of rational debate and I think many people, whether they're Yes or No, will find these comments insulting and offensive."

Robertson overegged his pudding but he was speaking to the converted, much like when Sturegon talks rubbish to her supporters about fairness, equality and social justice.

Robertson said:

"I want all those in the world who understand that the break-up of the United Kingdom would have cataclysmic geo-strategic effects, breaking up the solidarity of the West at this particular time, to say that. If people are worried about it, and I know they are, then I would hope that they would give the message that they would like the United Kingdom to stay together."

I have previously written about Robertson, he was never great as an MP just average.

He said Scottish Government plans to remove Trident nuclear submarines from their base on the Clyde in Scotland in the event of independence could make it "very difficult for Nato to accept them" as a member.

On that point he is right, Nato isn’t going to accept Scotland under an SNP administration, we could see a situation of ping pong, Labour joins Nato and has a nuclear sub base at Faslane, SNP kick them out.

His other point:

"Effectively, they wouldn't just be disarming an independent Scotland, they would effectively be disarming the remainder of the United Kingdom. I don't think that that would be viewed with great comfort or with any great satisfaction by those in the alliance who believe that Britain's nuclear deterrent is part and parcel of the West's security."

The sub base could be moved, it would be costly, it would be strategically unwise but it could be done, the UK will have a backup plan somewhere regarding storing of nuclear weapons.

His next point:

"I think if people think carefully about the world as it is today and what we've seen in Ukraine, what we see in Syria, what we see in the East China Sea and elsewhere, they'll recognise that this is a time for solidarity and solidity among the countries that are known as the West and the break-up of one of the principal countries in the West would certainly have major repercussions in the world, and people in Scotland I know will bear that in mind."

Russian has started a chain of unfortunate events, it is unlikely they will get out of the Crimea and that will be annexed, this will usher in a new ‘cold war’ in which unity will be important.

Slightly over dramatic stuff from Lord Robertson, cut through the hype, the screaming and the hysteria, and he does have some valid points, put rather badly though.

The SNP are planning to weaken Western defence by their anti nuclear stance, this cannot be allowed to happen, the people of Scotland have a duty and responsibility well beyond our borders to be part of Nato and sign up to the protocols regarding nuclear weapons.

Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon wan’t to indulge in petty student union politics which have no place in the real world, the people of Scotland will reject independence because as I previously said, the entire thing is bogus!

From Childcare to Nuclear, the SNP don’t understand that facts, details and that teamwork matters.

If Lord Robertson wants to speak, let him, it is doubtful he will sway many voters, I think the SNP are upset because Robertson is getting access to people that wouldn’t give Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon the time of day.

The Brookings Institute doesn’t let people in the door to do student politics, they left that behind them when they left university!

Yours sincerely

  1. Shocked?? Was she shocked when the leader of the Yes campaign used those same words about his nefarious claim of Yes computers being hacked.
Dark forces are at work here he claimed and so did that stary eyed loon Alyn Smith. So who did hack the computers? Hysterical claims, screeching voices are quite common among Yes campaigners.
When is someone really going to pin them down on all their assertions?
