Dear All
"There's gold in them thar hills”.
As well as lithium, niobium, iron ore, coablt and copper which I think means the Afghanistan mission has a new purpose.
$1trillion in untouched mineral deposits!
Now that American geologists have discovered nearly $1trillion (£820billion) in untapped mineral deposits, this makes Afghanistan one of the world’s most lucrative mining centres.
Since Afghanistan does not have any mining industry or infrastructure this opens the floodgates for American mining companies to get lucrative contracts rather like Iraq where the Americans has sown up the market.
However the Chinese who are have a track record in Africa have a toe in the water, two Chinese firms have committed to a $4billion investment in the vast Aynak copper mine.
Just south of Kabul, this is the biggest non-military foreign investment so far in the country.
David Cameron has been priming Britain to be "ready for further casualties" in Afghanistan over the summer as the big push to kill off the Taliban continues. I suspect that rather than getting the troops home; we are being soften up for decades in Afghanistan.
Of the latest developments, General David H. Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command said;
“There is stunning potential here”.
As we know there is a link between military adventures and business
Cameron has said he wanted to bring troops home "the moment it is safe to do so" but this ‘gem’ was also uttered, he had been advised that the threat from al-Qaeda from Pakistan and Afghanistan had reduced but would return if troops left.
In the fullness of time, I think we can expect the ‘commitment’ of troops coming home to fade if British Companies invest in Afghan infrastructure.
They say history has a habit of repeating itself and we maybe seeing not a return of the ‘British Empire’ but the birth of a global economic empire with a ‘national interest’ tag.
In a nutshell, fighting for profit under the guise of democracy!
We might see the rise of the ‘economic’ wars as developed countries fight for resources in the third world.
Yours sincerely
