Lt Col Jorge Mendonca isn't fit to be in the British Army, he should be stripped of command, dismissed from the forces and tried by an Iraqi Court

Dear All

In general the soldiers of the British Army are brave men and women doing a difficult job fighting in the various theatres of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One of the greatest stains on the British Army in Iraq is the death of Iraqi Baha Mousa.

Repeatedly beaten and tortured to death, a human body can only take so much before it shuts down and dies.

After 93 separate injuries inflicted through severe beatings, Baha Mousa’s body finally gave up life.

There is now an inquiry into his murder at the hands of British Forces while being held in the custody of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

That inquiry has heard that the British army commanding officer of the detention camp, Lt Col Jorge Mendonca was involved in hitting Baha Mousa.

Men follow the example of their Officers so Mendonca’s action contributed to the establishment of the culture of his camp.

The claim against Lt Col Jorge Mendonca comes from a serving soldier who claims to have personally witnessed him beating a prisoner.

In Mendonca’s court martial, he was cleared of all charges, the army has a history of protecting their own.

120 personnel of all ranks witnessed the attack on Baha Mousa but he was still cleared.

The Geneva Convention which Britain has signed up should have protected Baha Mousa from harm and abuse once he came into British custody but under Mendonca’s command, he and his men ran wild.

Mendonca isn’t fit to wear the uniform of the British Army; he should be strip of his rank and discharged from the service.

His continual presence is a stain on the honour of the British Army.
He should also face charges in an Iraqi Court of Law.

Baha Mousa was 26 years old before he was brutal tortured to death.
He was innocent man with a young family.

Yours sincerely
